One of the country's best-known directors internationally. His next film, Sumas y restas, (2001-2004) won the Garza de Oro for Best Picture and Best Actor at the IX Annual Miami Film Festival and the Best Ibero-American Film award from the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences (ALMA), to name only a few.

We've been trying to educate the Swiss about the incredible things happening in the Colombian filmmaking world: in the past 8-10 years, the Colombian film industry has blossomed with support from legislation few people know about but that seems to be having pretty good results. Certain directors who used to work almost exclusively in television have returned to filmmaking. Filmmaking in Colombia, like in most Latin American countries, is, financially speaking, a losing proposition. As one director friend put it: "When I work for TV I get paid; when I make a film, I foot the bill…" Gradually this has changed, incredibly so in Colombia. Of the 23 films we selected, 15 are fiction and of these 15, half were made in less than 14 months… Colombia is well known for its literature, for Botero's paintings, but only the Spaniards seem to have realized that Bogotá is a city with a lot of culture and many intellectuals, and filmmakers too, several of whom, like Sergio Cabrera, have returned to the country and manage to get financing from European producers, which together with Colombian funding, produces films with a particular charm, beloved by audiences and with a very human quality.
