Colombian films win major awards throughout the year on international festival circuit
The year is winding down and Colombia's film industry has had twelve great months. The number of films selected for major festivals around the world and the many awards in a variety of categories are proof of the current industry boom. Film festivals in Cannes, Berlin, Locarno, Toronto, San Sebastian, Busan, Utrecht, Warsaw, Annecy, Hiroshima, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Nueva York, Montreal and Havana, as well as a number of international foundations, recognized and honored the new vision of Colombian films like La Sirga, La Playa D.C., El Resquicio, Animalario, Los Retratos, Sofía y el terco, Chocó, Río, Minuto 200, Silencio en el Paraíso, Rodri, Nacer, Corta, Beatriz González ¿por qué llora si ya reí?, Pescador and projects such as Anna, Gente de bien, Cuentos de viejos, Buenaventura Mon Amour, Violencia, Tierra en la lengua, to name only a few.

Colombia Takes Six Awards at Havana Film Festival

Five Corales and a Special Mention from among the 22 productions representing the country in the Festival's 34th edition
Award-winning Colombian productions included the Colombian/Ecuadorian co-production Pescador by Sebastián Cordero, which won the Coral for Best Actor (Andrés Crespo) in the Official Fiction Competition; William Vega's La sirga won the First Coral for Best First Film; Carlos Osuna's Gordo, calvo y bajito, recieved the Third Coral for Best Animation; Sastre by César Andrés Heredia Cruz won a Special Jury Award in the Unpublished Screenplay Competition; Cocodrilos tomando el sol won in the Nuevas Miradas section and the documentary La Gorgona, historias fugadas by Camilo Botero won Posproducción ALBA Award "Nuestra América Primera Copia". Jhonny Hendrix Hinestroza's Chocó won Radio Habana Cuba's Roque Dalton Alternate Award in the First Film category.

Viviendo Positivamente Airs on NatGeo

Colombian Francoise Nieto-Fong is executive producer of the project featuring four outstanding Latin American directors
The mini-series Viviendo Positivamente is sponsored by Coca-Cola and features stories of people who have fought against great obstacles to achieve positive changes in their communities. Production equipment arrived in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Haiti, Mexico and Peru to shoot episodes directed by Latin American luminaries including Argentinean Natalia Smirnoff (Rompecabezas), Brazilian Katia Lund (Notícias de uma Guerra particular), Mexican Carlos Carrera (El crimen del padre Amaro) and Colombian Ciro Guerra (Los viajes del viento). The program's executive producer, Colombian Francoise Nieto-Fong, will also be opening an office in Los Angeles to develop the documentary project Al otro lado to be directed by Giorgio Serafini.

Françoise Nieto-Fong, Executive Producer of Viviendo Positivamente

This documentary producer and director founded Productora LAP in 2004 to offer production and media consulting services. She was the executive producer on 26 episodes of Expedición Natibo Visa, the first Latin American documentary series broadcast on the National Geographic channel combining content and advertising presence. She was a delegate producer for MTV in Colombia of concerts, reality shows and news and entertainment programs and also produced and directed current events reports in Latin America for the English language version of Aljazeera and directed Diarios de Alhajj in Panamá for Ajljazeera's documentary channel in the Middle East. She was also a producer on Los archivos privados de Pablo Escobar, a documentary released in theaters in Colombia and the US before being broadcast on television in throughout Latin America and Europe.

She was the executive producer of Margarita Martínez's documentary La selva en blanco and Corazón de hielo, filmed entirely in the Antarctic with support from Argentina's Antarctic Institute; Moviecity América Latina released both films in 2012. Recently she was executive producer for the Fox Latin American Channels and the Coca-Cola Company's Viviendo Positivamente.

European Parliament Ratifies Free Trade Treaty with Colombia

On December 11, the European Parliament ratified, with 486 votes in favor and only 147 against, the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Union and Peru and Colombia. After more than three years of negotiations, the treaty will take effect during the first quarter of 2013. "This was an historical vote. The European Parliament has cast a convincing vote for a better future for Europeans and Colombians alike," stated Colombia's EU ambassador
Rodrigo Rivera. "The positive results of this vote recognize Colombia's progress in recent years and demonstrate a desire for the mutual benefits both parties will enjoy as they promote employment and growth in both Colombia and the EU," added the Ambassador. This treaty is the latest in commercial agreements reached between Colombia and Switzerland, Canada, the US and the European Union.
