Colombia Kicks Off 2013 with Films in Berlin and Rotterdam After a successful 2012, the Colombian film industry starts the new year with films in two major world festivals Juan Andres Arango's first film La Playa D.C., co-produced by Colombia, France and Brazil, screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, which took place from January 23 to February 3, in the Bright Future section dedicated to first and second films. And, the Rotterdam Lab in the CineMart section, providing training in development, financing, post-production, digital distribution, VOD and sales to up-and-coming producers selected by international CineMart partners, where Jorge Andres Botero of Septima Films, representing Franco Lolli's project Gente de bien; Camilo Molano of Chapinero Films with Felipe Cano's La semilla del miedo, and Andrés Chaves, producer/director of Cartucho, co-produced with Brazil's If You Hold a Stone, participated. All three of these films were awarded FDC (Film Development Fund) grants. Colombia will also be present in three different sections of the Berlin Film Festival and two Colombians will take part in the Berlinale Talent Campus. See more >> Bollywood Spokesman Kulmeet Makkar Visits Medellin "I leave here very optimistic and with real plans to shoot in Medellin in the next 12 months." The executive director of The Film & Television Producers Guild of India Ltd., bringing together 95 percent of all industry members, visited the city that may well be the epicenter of one of the first Bollywood films to be made in this country. After six days of scouting locations in Medellin and a meeting with Mayor Anibal Gaviria to discuss the possibility of shooting, Makkar called the city an ideal place for film production. He told Semana Magazine "I'm leaving here very optimistic and have real plans to shoot in Medellin in the next 12 months. It's a win-win for everyone. Our collaboration would mean greater international exposure for Colombia; our films screen in 52 countries. And getting Colombian films seen through "Bollywood" could mean more industry resources and bolster tourism in Colombia." See more >> International Guests at Cartagena Film Festival The 53rd edition of Latin America's oldest film festival promises to surprise with an even greater number of films from major world festivals, national premieres, world releases and important guests Two directors and a street artist will attend retrospectives of their work at this year's Cartagena International Film Festival (FICCI): North American director/screenwriter Paul Schrader was a screenwriter for acclaimed director Martin Scorsese for many years (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ) and directed films like The Yakuza, American Gigolo, Affliction and Light Sleeper; Haitian director and political activist Raoul Peck will screen his most recent film, Fatal Assistance, dealing with the relief sent to Haiti following the earthquake (scheduled for its world premiere at the Berlin Festival only a week before Cartagena); and, finally, Brazilian street artist Bel Borba, who will present a documentary on his work over the past 35 years in Brazil's historic Salvador de Bahía and create a work of public art in the city of Cartagena. See more >> El Páramo Released in Spain Alta Films released the film in theaters on January 11 Produced by Colombia's Rhayuela Cine, the film was released in Spanish cinemas after drawing 325,681 spectators in Colombia to become the third largest selling Colombian film of 2011. El páramo, whose remake rights were sold to the US, hit the Spanish market following the success of Andi Baiz's La cara oculta (2012), released in the US and Italy at the beginning of 2012 after great success in Spain, where it spent two months in theaters and grossed more than 2.3 million Euros. Rentrak Spain, listed the film at number three during its first weekend in Spanish theaters. La cara oculta screened in 16 countries including England, France, Japan, Russia, Germany and Switzerland. El Páramo, the first film by director Jaime Osorio, was awarded a Film Development Fund (FDC) grant in 2007 and was released in Colombia in October 2011. See more >>
